Young and Dangerous

古惑仔系列電影



The Young and Dangerous series is based on the popular comic book series 古惑仔 created by Teddy Boy 牛佬. It details the adventures of a fictional Hong Kong triad gang " Hung Hing " 洪興 and its triad members Chan Ho Nam 陳浩南 and Chicken 山雞.

The first Young and Dangerous movie was released in 1996, due to its immense popularity in Hong Kong, the sequels 2 & 3 were made soon after which were also released in the same year. By the year 2000, there were 6 Young and Dangerous movies made and with 10 other spin-offs .

Andrew Lau directed all 6 of the Young and Dangerous movies and he also served as the cinematographer. Ekin Cheng and Jordan Chan with their role as Chan Ho Nam and Chicken also appeared in all 6 movies (although Chan was absent in the 5th Young and Dangerous movie). It is because of this series that propelled Cheng and Chan into super stardom.

Despite its popularity throughout Asia, the series glorified the secret triad societies which created many disputes on its effect on young people. Some Asian countries, typically Singapore and Malaysia, had the endings of the series altered just to down play the glory of triad gangs. Chan Ho Nam was infact an undercover cop in those endings. In China, the series was even banded from screening.

The Young and Dangerous series is based on the popular comic book 古惑仔 by Teddy Boy with Ekin Cheng as Chan Ho Nam and Jordan Chan as Chicken .

4. The Comic



The Young and Dangerous 古惑仔 comic series was created by Teddy Boy 牛佬 since 1992. It is based on the secret triad gangs and outlaws in Hong kong. The story details the adventures of Chan Ho Nam 陳浩南, how he became the leader (" Dragon Head ") 龍頭 of Hung Hing from a noboby, his friendship and loyalty with the triad members and his ups and downs in the "Jiang Hu" world.

The comic is currently still in production with issue 1149 as its latest. Some of the characters in the comic are based on the faces of Hong Kong celebrities such as Ekin Cheng, Andy Lau and Jacky Cheung. The creator of the comic even have a character named "Ekin" 伊健 as the leader of Kowloon Tong under Chan Ho Nam. "Ekin" also have an underlining called "Jordan" 小春.

5. The Game

There is a Young and Dangerous online game that spun from the comic and the movie series. It is called " Young and Dangerous online " 《古惑仔online》 which was later renamed as " Young and Dangerous Ji Yi online " 《古惑仔之義online》. There is also a 《古惑仔online》 on facebook established on 28/8/2008.

8. Interesting Facts

  • Kenny Ho 何家勁 was the first choice to be Chan Ho Nam, but he turned it down due to its negative impact on his image and eventually the role was landed with Ekin Cheng.
  • Similarly with Chicken who's prime choice was 金城武(Kaneshiro Takeshi) but eventually Jordan Chan became Chicken.
  • When the first young and dangerous movie was made, many cinemas were afraid to screen it in its prime time slots as they had no confidence it will do well.
  • A trademark in the Young and Dangerous series is the reuse of actors. The enemies that got killed off in previous movies kept coming back as new enemies in the sequels.
  • Chan Ho Nam's tatoo (the dragon tatoo on his chest, left arm and back) in the movie is different to the one in the comic ( which is a dragon tatoo on his back only).
